This included a diverse range of users, from tech-savvy individuals accustomed to digital interactions to those less familiar with technology. Understanding the varied demographics and technological proficiencies of Bank of America's customer base was crucial in designing a solution that catered to the needs of all users.

FunctionsCard Selection: Users are presented with a list of cards associated with their account and can easily select the card they wish to activate.Pin Request: Throughout the activation process, users have the option to request their card's PIN for added security and convenience.Intuitive Interaction: Erica anticipates users' needs by providing suggested follow-up questions related to the card activation process, enhancing the conversational flow and guiding users through the experience.Clear Feedback: Once the user selects a card for activation, Erica provides immediate confirmation, reassuring users that their request has been successfully processed.

Needs + SolutionsNeed: Simplify the card activation process.

Solution: The Activate My Card flow leverages Erica's conversational interface to guide users through the activation process step by step, eliminating the need for complex navigation or multiple interactions. By presenting a clear list of cards and enabling users to select their desired card with a single click, the process is streamlined and user-friendly.

Need: Ensure security throughout the activation process.

Solution: By integrating a PIN request option at various stages of the interaction, users have the opportunity to verify their identity and enhance the security of the card activation process. This feature adds an extra layer of protection while maintaining the convenience of the AI-driven interface.

Need: Anticipate users' questions and provide relevant assistance.&#38;nbsp;
Solution: Erica's proactive approach to suggesting follow-up questions based on users' initial inquiries ensures that users receive the assistance they need throughout the card activation process. By anticipating common queries and providing relevant information upfront, Erica enhances the overall user experience and minimizes user effort.

 Roles + ResponsibilitiesI collaborated closely with our product and content partners to develop the Activate My Card flow within the Erica chat interface. Together, we made decisions about semantics, ensuring that the language used was clear and aligned with the bank's brand voice.

ConclusionIn conclusion, the Activate My Card flow within the Erica chat interface represents a successful integration of AI technology to streamline a critical aspect of the banking experience. By prioritizing simplicity, security, and user-centric design principles, the solution effectively addresses the needs of Bank of America's diverse customer base.</description>

	Project (4) ~ Third Party Transactions, H&#38;amp;R Block
ObjectiveFor tax season 2023, a new law meant new tax obligations for individuals and businesses receiving payments via third-party settlement organizations (TPSO). The threshold for these platforms to send Form 1099-K significantly dropped from $20,000/200 transactions to $600/1 transaction. This change gave H&#38;amp;R Block the opportunity to position ourselves as an expert, go-to resource.
  Users + AudienceConsumers: Any individual receiving income from digital platforms or TPSO (e.g., Venmo, Facebook Marketplace, eBay). Due to the lower threshold, most consumers would not be aware of the change and might be surprised to receive a 1099-K.&#38;nbsp;Small Business Owners: Establishments that use TPSO who may or may not have previously qualified under the old regulations, but who will qualify this year with the lower threshold. Probably already aware of the rule but would need assistance navigating how it impacts next year’s taxes.
Use CasesFiler’s receiving more than one Form 1099-K.One Form 1099-k including multiple types of income.

 Roles + ResponsibilitiesI led this project as the main designer, ideating early concepts, regularly presenting to product managers and leadership, participating in usability testing feedback collection, and delivering final assets for production. I collaborated cross-functionally with our content and product partners.

FunctionsRequired fields from the IRS form needed to display any current income types (i.e., known businesses, farms, or rentals). We needed a way to inform users that they needed to create a form if it did not exist within their account and to create a way to automatically redirect users to that income type for entering information.

User FlowThis user flow illustrates the path a user might take to complete filing their Form 1099-K.
&#60;img width="12512" height="4230" width_o="12512" height_o="4230" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/3601caedab14547a6c18b3bc0dcc2863d51ad3976160118f74ffb61eec117711/Flow-separation.png" data-mid="163593571" border="0" data-scale="100" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/3601caedab14547a6c18b3bc0dcc2863d51ad3976160118f74ffb61eec117711/Flow-separation.png" /&#62;

PersonasFor representation purposes, I used the following persona, Mateo, to demonstrate how a customer who is married and filing jointly might navigate the flow.
&#60;img width="1440" height="1254" width_o="1440" height_o="1254" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/3e7cbe57693bf25a34942eb5f04d3b4bb3e6350c7e457b5e0b833aa1ce908512/Provider---Mateo---Happy-Path.png" data-mid="163593573" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/3e7cbe57693bf25a34942eb5f04d3b4bb3e6350c7e457b5e0b833aa1ce908512/Provider---Mateo---Happy-Path.png" /&#62;

Research FindingsModerated, in-person testing was conducted by the Research team for this flow. Ten people were matched to different scenarios using our QA environment. We made changes to certain verbiage and were able to identify gaps in the experience. Overall, the user response was positive and participants found the flow easy to navigate. Most importantly, the flow did not disrupt the tax experience and proved to be a seamless addition to the filing flow.

	Project (6)~ Estate Planning, Ethos
OverviewThrough the acquisition of Tomorrow, an app that includes software to guide you through the creation of a legal will and trust for your family, Ethos gained a suite of products which included Estate Planning. Offering wills and trusts at no additional cost to Ethos customers added value to their purchase.

ProblemDesigns for Estate Planning needed to be simple and light on content, as they appeared at checkout. Careful placement of new elements was crucial to avoid overwhelming or confusing users. Failure to ensure understanding of the Estate Planning package risked missing the goal of increasing conversion.

Needs + SolutionsThere were two variants for this experiment:
Optimized messaging + deadline - This variant included a rolling deadline in the copy which provided additional incentive to users and their purchase.
Optimized messaging without a deadline - The deadline was removed from variant 2 in order to test the performance of its appearance on the screen.

User Research(Facilitated by the Ethos Research team)The Estate Planning benefit was well-received by the majority of participants for the following reasons:The information was easy to comprehend.Estate Planning, as a complimentary product to life insurance, added a level of protection and convenience for Ethos customers.Finding a lawyer and creating a trust can be timely and expensive, and this free benefit gave customers peace of mind.

ConclusionDesigns for the bottom-of-funnel Estate Planning benefit resulted in a 12% lift in conversion.

	Speaking

Why I Speak

Ethics in design is not just my niche—it’s my mission. I’ve seen how tech can erode trust, exploit attention, and distort our sense of self. But I’ve also seen what’s possible when we design with humanity in mind.

I speak to empower designers and decision-makers to consider the why behind the what. To remember that every choice we make—from UI patterns to data flows—is a reflection of our values. My goal is to help shape a design culture that centers people over profits, integrity over growth, and long-term good over short-term gain.📬 Book Me to Speak

If you're hosting a conference, panel, podcast, or internal event and want to explore ethics in design in a compelling and practical way—I’d love to be part of the conversation.

I bring energy, clarity, and a deep passion for helping teams think more critically and compassionately about the products they create.

Ethics in Design: Building Tech That Honors People
Technology is not neutral—and neither is design. In this talk, Rhea unpacks what it means to design ethically in a digital world increasingly driven by engagement, surveillance, and manipulation. She explores:

How design choices impact user behavior and autonomy
The rise of dark patterns—and how to spot and dismantle them
The role of the designer as a moral agent, not just a pixel pusher
Case studies of ethical breaches and courageous counterexamples
Practical frameworks for ethical decision-making in product teams

This talk is ideal for product designers, engineers, creative teams, and organizational leaders who want to build products that are not only effective—but principled.Select Speaking Engagements

Her fascination with the ethical implications of technology began in college, where she wrote extensively on how social platforms were reshaping human relationships and attention. Today, she draws from years of design work, community engagement with the Center for Humane Technology, and a deep respect for thinkers like Jaron Lanier, Cal Newport, and Tristan Harris to guide her work and message.

Rhea has been speaking publicly since childhood—winning awards in oratorical competitions, joining Toastmasters Los Angeles as an adult, and speaking at design and tech conferences around the country. She invites audiences to think beyond functionality and aesthetics, urging designers, product teams, and leaders to design with intention, integrity, and accountability.

People ignore design that ignores people.
– Frank ChimeroDesign is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.&#38;nbsp;

Usability is about people and how they understand and use things, not about technology.

 &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;

I’m a product and visual designer with a somewhat unconventional path, but a very clear throughline. I’ve always been oriented toward design.

My background is in translation and linguistics, where I was trained to think deeply about meaning, structure, and how people interpret information. That foundation still shapes how I work today. I care a lot about clarity, both visually and conceptually, and how ideas actually land.

After graduate school, I made a deliberate pivot into design through CalArts and self-study, followed by roles at H&#38;amp;R Block and Ethos, and now consulting on enterprise work including Apple and Bank of America. Across these environments, I’ve worked as both a systems thinker and a visual designer, building experiences that hold up across products, platforms, and contexts.

More recently, my work has focused on presentation design and visual storytelling. I enjoy taking complex or abstract ideas and giving them structure, hierarchy, and a clear point of view. It’s where my background in language and my eye for design come together most naturally.

I didn’t come up through a traditional design path, but I’ve moved with intention, developing both the craft and judgment needed to contribute at a high level. I’m a generalist by nature, with strengths across product, visual design, and brand, but at the core, I care about precision, taste, and how things function experientially.

More simply, I like when things make sense.

I was drawn to design early on. I was writing about wanting to be a “desiner” when I was six, and in a lot of ways, I’ve just been finding my way back to that instinct ever since.
